The World Health Organization (WHO) defines GMOs as genetically modified organisms (i.e., plants, animals or microorganisms) in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination.

 

The non-GMO label means the food product wasn’t made with GMO, but this doesn't mean it's organic. Some food producers have their products certified by the Non-GMO Project, which is the only independent verification organization in North America.
